First published in the May 1938 issue Cosmopolitan Magazine (U.S.A.) as Prelude for War. Serialized in Answers Magazine (UK) in 1938, as The Saint and the Sinners. First hardcover publishing in England was by Hodder and Stoughton, and in the U.S.A. was by The Crime Club both in 1938, as Prelude for War. Triangle Books of the U.S.A. changed the title to The Saint Plays With Fire in 1942. Hodder and Stoughton changed the title to The Saint Plays With Fire in 1951.
